Montclair Community News – September 16, 2019
A message from the MPOA President, Robert Clemens:
Trash Contract Update: We will not pursue a contract with Bates at this time. During September's Board meeting, the motion to accept an agreement with Bates Trucking and Trash Removal for trash and recycling service was rescinded because Bates is unable to meet the agreement's terms. A few information exchanges between the MPOA and Bates occurred in August. First, Bates stated, "At this time we need to look at all of our costs associated with a large community and determine if we would be a good fit at this time. I feel confident that if it was one billing we could work it all out but the market at this time is too fluid." Then Bates reported recycling disposal fees increased to $82 per ton, and that "the only way to provide the services pursuant to the RFP/Service agreement at this point would be to bill 23.00 dollars per month for the single family homes and 20.00 dollars per month for the townhomes. This rate would be for 1 year as long as no increases in services or disposal fees are enacted." That equates to 63% more than our rate with American Disposal, which is unacceptable. The American Disposal contract is in effect until April 2022, and we will continue with American until Montclair can present a proposal that attracts multiple trash haulers. The primary hindrance is that our community is not a single payer, participation is optional, and a hauler must manage up to 3,800 accounts. This is an issue the board and community must solve so we can be competitive during our next bidding process.
